However, challenges such as delayed implementation, limited funding, and infrastructural gaps hinder its effective execution . As neighboring countries accelerate their AI initiatives, Pakistan must expedite its efforts to harness AI’s potential fully.
In May 2023, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) unveiled a draft National AI Policy, aiming to position Pakistan as a knowledge-based economy. The policy’s pillars included raising AI awareness, upskilling the workforce, and integrating AI across various sectors. Yet, as of March 2025, this policy remains in draft purgatory, awaiting the green light from the federal cabinet—a delay that raises eyebrows and questions about our commitment to technological advancement.
The formation of a policy committee to oversee AI initiatives was a step in the right direction. However, whispers in the tech corridors suggest that this committee resembles more of an exclusive club than a merit-based assembly. By favoring a select few and sidelining genuine AI experts, are we not shooting ourselves in the foot?
